Welcome Robert William Greene 8.28.2009

Our son, Robert William Greene, decided to join our world on August 28th. He just couldn't wait to meet us, so he decided to come a couple weeks early! I had a doctors appointment on August 27th where the doctor told me that I was about 3 centimeters dilated and she told me she could tell that when I did go into labor that my water would break (somehow they know these things....don't ask me how). Well on Thursday night I kept waking up with mild cramps, but I just brushed them off as another glorious pregnancy symptom. Friday morning I woke up, ate some raisin bran and started getting ready for work. Curt was gone off to work for a whole 4 minutes when I called him to tell him "my water just broke!!!". He turned around to head home, while I instantly started bawling. It was a mix of emotions; scared, happy, mortified, excited, ready and not ready at all, panic and everything else you can imagine. Curt showed up about 2 minutes later, we rushed to set the house for the animals and headed to East Cooper Hospital to give birth to our new baby boy, the car ride wasn't too bad except the contractions that started to follow. I guess when your water breaks those puppies start to show up full throttle.

As I entered the emergency room, there were two other pregnant girls in the waiting room, I guess it was a popular day to have babies?? The nurse came down and put me in a wheel chair as Curt signed me in and grabbed by bags. I then got put into a prep room, where I got to meet the anesthesiologist (great friend to have by the way) and my doctor (who was on call that night, thank the lord, yippeeee!!) who came in to check me and told me that I was already about 4 centimeters and she could feel his little foot down there (breech baby, let's not forget). Well lucky me, I got pushed up to "emergency" status having a breech baby and all, I bumped TWO other pregnant girls back on the schedule who had planned c-sections that morning. I bet they didn't like me very much. :)

They took me into the Operating room after asking me about 1 million questions about my family history and stuff. Why they wait to ask you these questions when you are having contractions every four minutes, I HAVE NO CLUE. The operating room is a scary place, very bright, VERY cold and just scary. The anesthesiologist sat me on the table and did my spinal, it didn't hurt at all and instantly my whole lower body started tingling and then went numb. Curt put his "lab" outfit on and came in and sat by my head. I think it was about 5 minutes later when our boy was finally pulled out of me. I lay there behind the blue curtain listening to Awww's, excitement and laughter from the whole medical team and Curt, but all I really wanted to hear was him cry. It took a few seconds, which seemed like an eternity, but then I heard the most beautiful sound in the world. I think the first thing Curt said was "he has brown hair!!" :)

They showed him to me and I couldn't believe how beautiful he was, of course I knew I was pregnant and I knew that we were having a baby, but I had no idea how beautiful of a little person we were growing and the best part is, he is all ours!!! :) Robert William was 7 lbs 12 oz and 20 inches long. I have to admit, we make damn good looking babies. :)

The baby was taken to the nursery to get checked out and cleaned up and I had Curt follow. I guess since he was two weeks early, his lungs were a bit underdeveloped (details to follow) and he had a little fluid in his lungs, typical for c-section babies. I got taken to my post partum room and expected our baby to join me, but his issues were a little more serious than we hoped. Since I couldn't get up until later that night, I didn't even get to hold our son until 12am the next morning. If I would have known that I wouldn't get to hold him again for quite some time, I'd have sat in that nursery forever.

The next morning the nurse came into the room and explained to us that he had a pheunmothorax in his lungs and that they thought that MUSC would be the best place for him right now. They transferred him to the other hospital that morning and gave me a day's release to go see him. He was hooked up to machines and was taken to the NICU for recovery. It's been a very tough run for him and us, having a baby is emotional enough, without having to NOT be around him 24/7 and have him home. He's been in there for 1 week and 3 days now. He's making GREAT progress and hopefully he'll be home soon. I will keep you all posted. Keep him in your prayers for a quick recovery.
